Fair Trade fortnight

Fair Trade Fortnight
5-20 May 2012
Having the great fortune to be in the employment of a Fair Trade Workplace (The glorious Depot), I found myself at the Auckland Fair Trade Breakfast at the Britomart Country Club in the autumnal chilliness of the morning. Surrounded by fellow Fair Trade aficionados munching on Kokako’s moist and delicious banana cakes, muesli and All Good bananas I listened delightedly to the news that Auckland is joining Wellington and Dunedin in announcing itself as a Fair Trade city.
Honestly, it was such a delight to be surrounded by people (among them Urban Village Style-ee Naomi Bisley) bursting with the enthusiasm necessary to promote the particular brand of social and environmental justice that Fair Trade specialises in. Chatting on the lawn, drinking the free-flowing Fair Trade organic coffee and hot chocolate on offer, and listening to a talk from Michael, a Papua New Guinean coffee producer, was such a splendid way to refresh ones battered fervour for all things creative, ethical and exciting.
Becoming a Fair Trade city entails (in part) having more than 300 Fair Trade certified businesses busying themselves within your boroughs, so having achieved this status means that consumers no longer have any reason to not support growers, producers, retailers and our dear planet earth when popping out for a morning coffee.
All in all a great opportunity to get out and about in the morning crispness, meet some amazing and inspiring people and eat some tasty delicious food! The festivities are continuing for the next fortnight, great time to gain some resolve to get out and about!
